Tour Windmill De Hoop Elen

Tour Windmill De Hoop Elen

Windmill ‘De Hoop’ was built in 1870. The mill had several owners before it was shut
down in 1968. In 1978, it was declared a protected monument. The mill’s architecture,
particularly the octagonal gallery that served as storage, is unique in Flanders and makes
the mill extra special. In 2001, the mill came under the management of the volunteers of
vzw windmolen ‘De Hoop’. With combined efforts and the support of hundreds of
sympathisers and sponsors, this great local initiative resulted in the restoration of ‘De
Hoop’ into a fully working mill. Some of the warehouses were converted into holiday
accommodation.
